Canada Contributes to Help Secure the Summit of the Americas

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - April 16, 2009) - The Government of Canada is pleased to announce a significant contribution to the security for the 5th Summit of the Americas, taking place 17-19 April 2009 in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. HMCS Athabaskan, an Iroquois-class area air defence destroyer including a CH-124 Sea King helicopter detachment from Halifax, and a CP-140 Aurora, a long-range maritime patrol aircraft based out of CFB Greenwood will be providing maritime surveillance throughout the duration of the Summit.

In addition, Canada has provided one CC-130 Hercules and CC-150 Airbus to Trinidad and Tobago for airlift of military and police personnel from Caribbean Community countries to assist Trinidadian authorities during the Summit.

"The Canadian Forces is proud to play such an important role in the security of this significant event," said Defence Minister and Minister of the Atlantic Gateway, Peter Gordon MacKay. "It is an important part of Canada's contribution to the security pillar of the Government's Americas Strategy in the Western Hemisphere."

The Summit, hosted by Trinidad and Tobago is one of the highest profile events to occur in the hemisphere and the only one where all Heads of State and Government of the democratic nations of the Americas are together. It is the only leaders' hemispheric summit that both Canada and the US attend.

At the request of the Government of Trinidad and Tobago, the Canadian Forces are contributing to multi-national security efforts for the Summit, providing maritime surveillance support to the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force. This aligns with the Government of Canada's America's Strategy and the Canada First Defence Strategy.
