Canada Marks National Peacekeepers' Day

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Aug. 9, 2008) - The Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, participated in a ceremony today to mark Canada's first official day of national recognition for our peacekeepers. The ceremony today took place in the presence of peacekeeping Veterans at the Peacekeeping Monument located in downtown Ottawa.

"Often our peacekeepers go where there is little peace to be kept, to places where they are, quite frankly, the only difference between war and peace," said Minister Thompson. "Each one of our peacekeepers has made a real and lasting difference in defending our shared values of freedom, democracy and the rule of law. As Canadians, we take pride in their efforts and we are grateful for their service."

National Peacekeepers' Day is one way Canadians can express their pride and honour not only for members of the Canadian Forces, but for members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and other police forces, and also members of our diplomatic corps and civilians who have and continue to support international peace and security operations around the world and here at home.

"It's been said that the only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing. Canadian men and women have always been willing to step forward to serve our country and the world in times of need," said Minister Thompson. "Our government is proud to honour such selfless service and to be doing our part in restoring Canada's strong and independent voice on the world stage."

The year 2008 marks the 60th anniversary of the beginning of worldwide peacekeeping. For more information on Canada's role in international peacekeeping and peace support missions, please visit www.vac-acc.gc.ca.
