Canada, Ontario and the HELP Clean Water Regional Partnership Celebrate Milestone in Clean Water Initiative for Southwestern Ontario Residents

CENTRAL ELGIN, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Sept. 19, 2014) - Today, the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Public Works and Government Services and Regional Minister for Southwestern Ontario, was joined by Joe Preston, Member of Parliament for Elgin-Middlesex-London, the Honourable Deb Matthews, Deputy Premier, Minister Responsible for the Poverty Reduction Strategy, President of the Treasury Board of Ontario and Member of Provincial Parliament for London - North - Centre, and Mark Cosens, Chair of the Elgin Area Joint Board of Management, to celebrate three major milestones in the Huron Elgin London Project for Clean Water (HELP Clean Water) initiative in Central Elgin, Ontario. Minister Finley was representing her colleague the Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Infrastructure, Communities and Intergovernmental Affairs and Minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec.

The (HELP) Clean Water partners celebrated the groundbreaking of the Elgin Residue Management Facility (RMF); the completion of the twinning of the Elgin Area Transmission Pipeline; and the launch of a new project to replace a filtration system in the Elgin area.

Residents in Southwestern Ontario will be assured of safe, clean water for generations as a result of a funding partnership between the Government of Canada, the Province of Ontario and the HELP Clean Regional Water Partnership.

The multi-year HELP Clean Water initiative includes other components throughout Southwestern Ontario, such as the twinning of the Lake Huron transmission pipeline in the areas of Mt. Carmel and Ailsa Craig; the installation of a fibre optic monitoring system to detect leaks and deterioration; construction of the Lake Huron Residue Management Facility; the installation of the Lake Huron backup generator; and the construction of the Southeast Reservoir and Pump Station in London.

The Government of Canada is committed to creating jobs, growth and economic prosperity. By investing in infrastructure like the HELP Clean Water initiative, the Government of Canada and its partners are laying the foundation for building strong communities all across the country.

This project will enable the region to meet its demands for clean drinking water, helping to ensure the health and safety of Canadians and their families, and protect the environment for decades to come.

  • The HELP Clean Water Regional Partnership provided the remaining $79,813,961 of the total project cost of $179,784,242.
  • HELP Clean Water was created by the HELP Clean Water Regional Partnership. It is funded by the Government of Canada, the Government of Ontario and the HELP Clean Water Regional Partnership.
  • HELP Clean Water Regional Partnership includes the Lake Huron and Elgin Area Primary Water Supply System Boards of Management and the City of London.
  • This initiative will enhance the quality and reliability of clean drinking water for 14 municipalities in Southwestern Ontario between Lake Huron and Lake Erie.
