Canada Post Reassures Canadians That Mail Delivery Will Continue

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Nov. 13, 2008) - Canada Post wants to reassure its customers that mail delivery will be unaffected by any labour disruption by the Union of Postal Communications Employees (UPCE). Talks between Canada Post and the UPCE, part of the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC), have broken off and the union has filed a 72-hour notice of strike action.

The 2,100 UPCE-represented employees, representing approximately, 5% of Canada Post's 70,000 employees, are predominantly administrative and technical workers and do not handle the mail. Employees responsible for the collection and delivery of the mail are members of a separate union and have a valid contract. Canada Post will use every means necessary to ensure that mail delivery is unaffected.

Canada Post has made every effort to negotiate with the union over the past 5 months, tabling several offers and repeatedly re-iterating our availability. However, the union chose to meet with the Corporation for just 4 days of a 60-day conciliation period, and was only intermittently available during a three-week mediation period.

"It's very disappointing that the union chose to reject Canada Post's most recent offer without any further discussion", said Mark MacDonell, General Manager, Labour Relations at Canada Post. "We find it hard to imagine, in this day and age and in the current economic context, that a union being offered continued job security provisions, a fully-indexed pension and salary increases for its members would elect to go on strike over a benefits package that's better than what most Canadian workers currently have."

Some of the key highlights of Canada Post's offer include:

- Four year contract, providing stability for employees and Canada Post

- A 2.25% wage increase for years one and two, and 2.5% for years three and four;

- Job security for employees

- A renewal of the cost of living clause;

- A Short Term Disability Program that includes income protection for all employees;

- Retention of 7 weeks holidays after 28 years service for all employees on strength at the time of contract signing.
