Canada Revenue Agency Professionals Reach Settlement

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - July 13, 2005) - Auditor, computer systems and other professionals at the Canada Revenue Agency (AFS Group) reached a tentative settlement last night following a last ditch attempt to resolve the collective bargaining impasse.

"We are relieved that we will not need to undertake strike activity at this time. Strike action is never the best way to settle a dispute. However, there is a point at which employees must take a stand when their wages and their pensions are being cut back. Professionals at the Canada Revenue Agency were prepared to show that they would not be pushed around," said Professional Institute President Michele Demers.

"We wanted to reach a fair agreement", added Real Lamarche, AFS Group Chair. "The Revenue Agency was giving us no choice regarding strike action. We are very disappointed that this round of negotiations has been particularly hostile to members of the AFS Group. Nevertheless, we stayed strong throughout the process. Our job is done; it is now up to the members to decide to accept this agreement".

The details of the tentative agreement will be released at a rally to be held this morning at 11:30 at the Ottawa Taxation Centre, 875 Heron Road in Ottawa. Members will have the opportunity to vote on the offer when the ratification package is mailed out to them within the next two weeks. All planned strike action is suspended pending an outcome of the ratification vote.

PIPSC represents more than 10,000 auditors, computer systems and other professionals at the Canada Revenue Agency across Canada, including over 3,500 in the National Capital Region. The AFS Group collective agreement expired eighteen months ago on December 21, 2003.
