Canada Safeway Partners With Muscular Dystrophy to "Make Muscles Move"

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - July 31, 2012) - Canada Safeway has launched its month-long fundraising and awareness campaign in support of children, youth and adults affected by neuromuscular disorders. For the fourth consecutive year Canada Safeway continues its commitment to raise much needed funds for research and to support equipment needs through the "Safeway Mobility Grants" program.

Jeremy and Kira Dixon, whose two children are affected by a rare form of muscular dystrophy, are recipients of a Kidwalk. The device allows six year old Nevan and three year old Ella to stand, move independently and build their strength.

"Before my children were born, I took walking, running and movement for granted. Now, I know that mobility is an amazing gift that changes lives. That may sound like a cliché, but that's the reality for my kids and for all of the children affected by muscular dystrophy," Kira explains.

"Through Canada Safeway's efforts Muscular Dystrophy Canada is able to continue the relentless search for a cure while also making a difference in people's everyday lives. Safeway's support is invaluable to people with neuromuscular disorders," said Catherine Sherrard, CEO of Muscular Dystrophy Canada.

Safeway is one of the largest corporate supporters of families living with disabilities in Canada and dedicates the entire month of August to raising funds for Muscular Dystrophy Canada. Last year $1.2 million was raised in Western Canada through a variety of in-store fundraising events, the Safeway Walk for Muscular Dystrophy as well as donations received from customers. Over $65 million has been raised by Safeway across Northern America in the past decade in support of families living with neuromuscular disorders.

During the campaign, Canada Safeway customers are invited to make a donation at the checkstand when shopping at their local Safeway. With a donation of $2.00 customers receive 5 AIR MILES reward. All of the funds raised during the campaign will go directly to research initiatives and Safeway Mobility Grants that support equipment needs for hundreds of families in western Canada.
