Canada Supports Economic Growth in the North

WHITEHORSE, YUKON--(Marketwire - Aug. 30, 2010) - Businesses and individual residents across the North will benefit from funding to the Whitehorse Chamber of Commerce Northern Chambers Meeting. This investment is made possible through Canada's Economic Action Plan.

The Honourable John Duncan, Minister of the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency announced funding of $71,900 to support the Northern Chambers Meeting being held in Whitehorse on August 31-September 1.

"This groundbreaking meeting brings together all northern Chambers of Commerce for the first time, providing a unique opportunity to discuss economic development issues that are of relevance to them as Northerners," said Minister Duncan, who is also Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor of Métis and Non-Status Indians. "It is through strategic partnerships such as this that we can establish common goals that will ultimately benefit the North and all of Canada."

"The sharing of ideas and programs, such as the Yukon Business Development Project, can enrich economic development across the North, creating jobs and opportunities for the people who live in the North," said the Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister Responsible for the North and Minister of Health.

"Chambers of Commerce are active throughout the North, but the remoteness of and great distances between communities make communication and cooperation difficult," says Rick Karp, President of the Whitehorse Chamber of Commerce. "Now, with CanNor's support, the capacity of small northern Chambers to impact the economies of their communities, to speak with one voice from the North, and to create sustainable economic development will be within reach...we are very grateful for this support."

The Whitehorse Chamber of Commerce (WCC) is hosting its Annual General Meeting and inviting all Chambers of Commerce north of 60 for the first time to participate in a round-table discussion. It will also use this opportunity to present several new Yukon programs it has developed to the participants, including its Yukon Business Development Plan. Investment in this project is made possible through the Strategic Investments in Northern Economic Development (SINED) program, which focuses on long-term economic growth, economic diversification and capacity building in all three territories.

SINED is one of several economic development programs within CanNor, which is responsible for coordinating and delivering Canada's economic development across the North, and for related policy development, research and advocacy.
