Canada Supports Economic Growth in the Yukon

WHITEHORSE, YUKON--(Marketwire - April 1, 2010) - The Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor) is investing in emerging industries in the Yukon with funding to the Dakwakada Development Corporation.

The Honourable Senator Daniel Lang made the announcement today on behalf of the Honourable Chuck Strahl, Minister of CanNor.

CanNor will provide $50,000 to the Dakwakada Development Corporation to assist its exploration of bio-fuel opportunities in the territory.

"There is significant potential to harness waste wood as a renewable resource in the Yukon," said Senator Lang. "This material could prove to be a valuable alternative for imported sources of fuel."

"Local, innovative industries like bio-energy have the potential to strengthen and diversify the local economy, creating new jobs for Yukon residents," said the Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister Responsible for the North and Minister of Health. "Our Government is proud to support initiatives that have long-term ecological benefits."

"CanNor's assistance is facilitating our ability to determine the viability, and level, of Dakwakada Development Corporation's participation in the creation and development of a bio-energy industry, in the Yukon," said Murray Arsenault, General Manager of the Dakwakada Development Corporation. "Capitalizing on our renewable resource opportunities, and thereby replacing imported energy, is a goal of Dakwakada's. A successful bio-energy industry in the Yukon will be a win for all Yukoners. "

This investment was made possible through the Strategic Investments in Northern Economic Development (SINED) program, which was renewed as part of Canada's Economic Action Plan in Budget 2009. This program focuses on strengthening the driver sectors of the territorial economies, economic diversification and encouraging Northerners' participation in the economy.

SINED is one of a suite of economic development programs delivered by CanNor in Yukon, the Northwest Territories, and Nunavut. CanNor is responsible for coordinating and delivering federal economic development activities in the territories, and for related policy development, research and advocacy.
