Canada to Host World Top Snowboarders at the FIS World Cup in Quebec

Canada Snowboard receives Government of Canada support to host world-class athletes, including Canadian Olympians, at the 2015 FIS Snowboard World Cup in Québec City and Stoneham


STONEHAM, QUEBEC--(Marketwired - Feb. 17, 2015) - Department of Canadian Heritage and Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions

The Honourable Bal Gosal, Minister of State (Sport), today announced the Government of Canada has provided $210,000 to Canada Snowboard, through Sport Canada's Hosting Program, to support the 2015 International Ski Federation (FIS) Snowboard World Cup from February 19 to 22 at Stoneham Mountain Resort in Stoneham, Quebec.

The Honorable Denis Lebel, Minister of Infrastructure, Communities and Intergovernmental Affairs and Minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec, also announced a contribution of $175,000 to support marketing outside Quebec of the 2015 Snowboard Jamboree, one of the scheduled stops on the 2014-2015 FIS Snowboard World Cup calendar.

  • This is the 16th World Cup held in Quebec; this 2015 edition will attract 130 athletes from 25 countries.

  • The FIS Snowboard World Cup is part of Snowboard Jamboree, a popular snowboard festival held in the region since 2005.

  • For the 2014-2015 fiscal year, the Government of Canada, through Sport Canada's Sport Support Program, has contributed $2,565,000 to Canada Snowboard to support programs for national teams, national championships, coaching and officiating development, as well as various other national initiatives.

  • This is one of two snowboard events supported by Sport Canada's Hosting Program in 2014-2015; $40,000 was also provided to the 2015 Canada Snowboard IPC Para World Cup in Big White, British Columbia.

  • For the 2013-2014 fiscal year, the Government of Canada provided $653,940 through Sport Canada's Athlete Assistance Program to 57 athletes to help with their living, training and education expenses and allow them to focus on their training.

  • Canada Snowboard is the main provider of programs and support services, based on established principles of long-term athlete development, for all levels of snowboarding. It is committed to high-performance excellence in World Cup, World Championship, and Olympic and Paralympic competition.

  • Since 2010, Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions (CED) has supported the Snowboard Jamboree with contributions totalling more than $660,000.

  • CED's support will help showcase the event, as well as the winter attractions of Québec City and its region, throughout North America, Europe and Asia.

  • The 2015 Snowboard Jamboree will contribute tourist-related-spending of $1.5 million for Quebec.
