Canada's 50 years in Space: The COSPAR Anniversary

Amidst the MDA controversy a new book by one of Canada’s most respected Space Scientists, released this week, discusses the past and future of Canada’s space program.

Attention: Assignment Editor, Books Editor, Education Editor, News Editor, Science Editor TORONTO, ONTARIO, MEDIA ADVISORY--(Marketwire - May 6, 2008) - A new book by one of Canada's most respected Space Scientists, released this week, discusses the past and future of Canada's space program just as the Federal government has intervened in the sale of Canadian aerospace giant MacDonald Dettwiler (MDA).

Canada's 50 years in Space by Dr Gordon Shepherd of York University provides an unprecedented look into the hard work and achievements made by Canadian Space Scientists from 1958 to the present day.

The controversy surrounding MDA comes just as Canada is about to celebrate its 50th anniversary as a founding member of the international space organization COSPAR.

CANADA'S Fifty Years In Space: The COSPAR Anniversary is the new book by the Distinguished Research Professor Emeritus Gordon G. Shepherd and acclaimed science journalist Agnes Kruchio.

In 2003 Dr. Mark Garneau, Canada's first astronaut, presented Dr Gordon Shepherd with the prestigious John H. Chapman Award of Excellence in recognition for his pioneering space research.

MDA's space division may be sold to American Defense contractor Alliant Techsystems Inc. (ATK) just as the world's leading space scientists gather in Montreal for the 37th COSPAR Assembly where, under the chairmanship of Dr Shepherd, Canada will celebrate its 50 years of Space Research.

To gain a unique insider's perspective on just how much has been accomplished by Canada's space scientists over the last 50 years, interviews are available with Dr. Shepherd, a leading figure in the Canadian space community for the past 45 years.
