Canada's Annual Sci-Fi Fan Event Features New Name & Added Events

"Polaris 21" will bring actors from "Star Trek", "Stargate", "Heroes" and more to Toronto next month.

Attention: Arts/Entertainment Editor, Lifestyle Editor, Media Editor TORONTO/ONTARIO/MEDIA ADVISORY--(Marketwire - June 12, 2007) - For 20 years, science fiction fans from around the world have flocked to Toronto for the annual science fiction convention, "Toronto Trek". And while attendees of the event have known for years that the event celebrated far more than just "Star Trek", this year the organizers have decided to reflect that fact with a new, more all-encompassing name. For this, the 21st year of the convention, the 3-day event has been renamed "Polaris".

But while the name has changed, the tradition of bringing in guests from the most popular sci-fi shows continues. This year's guests include actress Marina Sirtis who played Counselor Deanna Troi on the hugely popular Star Trek: The Next Generation. Marina will be joined by actors Erick Avari (Chandra Suresh, from the current hit series "Heroes"), Katee Sackhoff (Starbuck, from "Battlestar Galactica"), Ron Glass (Shepherd Book, "Firefly"), Teryl Rothery (Dr. Janet Frasier, "Stargate SG-1"), and several others. Also featured will be Author Guests of Honour Tanya Huff and Keith R.A. DeCandido, and actor/stunt director Erik Buchanan, who will be hosting theatrical fighting workshops at the event.

Other programming that "Toronto Trek" attendees have come to enjoy such as "Klingon Karaoke", and the Masquerade/Costume Competition will also be returning, as will the charity auction supporting Ronald McDonald House.

New for this year is the introduction of the Constellation Awards, which are Canada's only fan-voted awards celebrating excellence in science fiction television and film. The award ceremonies will be hosted by City-TV and MuchMusic personalities Ed the Sock and Liana K., of "Ed's Night Party!" fame.

Featuring autograph and question/answer sessions with the actors and much more, Polaris 21 will be held July 6-8, 2007, at Toronto's Doubletree International Plaza Hotel. Prices start at $28 for adults, $10 for kids. For more information, see www.tcon.ca or phone 416-410-TCON.
