Canada's Economic Action Plan: Creating Jobs And Promoting Science-The Government of Canada Invests in Modernizing Federal Laboratories in Mont-Joli

MONT JOLI, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - June 5, 2009) - The Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, today announced funding of over $4.3 million over the next two years to modernize Fisheries and Oceans Canada's Maurice Lamontagne Institute, located in Mont Joli, Quebec.

Through Canada's Economic Action Plan, the Government of Canada made a commitment to provide $250 million over the next two years to modernize federal laboratories. This funding, one of many job-creating investments in the Economic Action Plan, is intended to modernize these facilities and stimulate regional economies.

"By making this investment, Our Government is providing an important infusion into the economy of this region" said Minister Shea. "Further, our scientists and researchers will have an even healthier and more modern work environment, conducive to research and development, leading to a better understanding of marine environments."

This project includes work to repair aging infrastructure, such as upgrading of mechanical systems (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) and more specialized systems dedicated to scientific operations, in a secure environment that meets new standards. Major corrective work will be carried out on the tank room and water intake.

The Maurice Lamontagne Institute is home to teams with a special interest in fisheries, aquaculture, marine mammals, navigation, management and protection of the environment, habitat, resources and aquatic ecosystems. The work of the Institute's teams generates essential data for understanding aquatic ecosystems, assessing and managing to better effect the impact of human activity on these ecosystems, and guaranteeing the safety of navigable waters. The Institute has an annual budget of $32 million and employs some 400 people.
