Canada's Government Applauds Students for Green Vehicle Designs

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - June 12, 2009) - The Government of Canada applauds the achievements of 17 teams from universities across Canada and the U.S. whose innovative designs have created clean car technology for the next generation of green vehicles. Today, Minister of Natural Resources Lisa Raitt and Minister of Transport and Infrastructure John Baird announced that a team of engineering students from Ohio State University has won the first phase of EcoCAR: The NeXt Challenge competition.

"Our government is proud to support Canada's best and brightest students as they do their part to contribute to the cleaner and more efficient vehicles of tomorrow," said Minister Raitt. "The achievements recognized today in new, green vehicle technology are a key component to creating new jobs and economic opportunities while addressing today's environmental challenges."

"Road vehicles are a major contributor to air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions in Canada," said Minister Baird. "The successful projects will help contribute to a more sustainable transportation system."

Three Canadian teams from the University of Victoria, the University of Waterloo, and the University of Ontario Institute of Technology are participating in the competition. The University of Victoria placed second in the competition. Students were encouraged to consider a variety of technologies, including hybrid, plug-in hybrid, fuel cell, electric and extended range electric vehicles.

The Government of Canada has contributed $500,000 to EcoCAR: The NeXt Challenge, which is also sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy and General Motors. The Government of Canada supports other, similar activities as part of its broader commitment to encourage the accelerated development and market-readiness of technology solutions in clean energy.
