Canada's Government Awards Contract for 17 Wing Winnipeg Defence Infrastructure Project

WINNIPEG, MANITOBA--(Marketwire - May 8, 2009) - The Department of National Defence (DND), through Defence Construction Canada, has awarded a contract for close to $2.9 million to Borland Construction Inc of Winnipeg, MB, for the reconstruction of the south east apron at 17 Wing Winnipeg. This project will bring economic benefits to the Winnipeg area.

"This investment, which is part of the $6 million in infrastructure upgrades I announced in Winnipeg this past March, clearly demonstrates the commitment of this government to the Canadian Forces," said the Honourable Peter Gordon Mackay, Minister of National Defence and Minister for the Atlantic Gateway. "This locally awarded contract is yet another example of how this government contributes to the economic foundation of communities across Canada."

The existing apron was built in 1980 and has since undergone several repairs and re-sealing. The apron serves as an aircraft parking and maintenance area, and is used for loading and refuelling the aircraft at the Wing. The reconstruction project, which recently got underway, will rebuild approximately 13,215 m2 of the south east apron.

DND holds a large number of properties all across the country to support the Canadian Forces, including some 21,000 buildings; 2.25 million hectares of land; 5, 500 km of roads; and 3,000 km of water, storm and sewer pipes. Aligning with the Canada First Defence Strategy, replacing infrastructure will help produce a first-class, modern military that is ready to take on the challenges of the 21st century.

DND and Defence Construction Canada developed an open, fair and transparent competitive process in order to award the contract for the reconstruction of the south east apron.
