Canada's National Art Collection is Safe and Accessible

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - May 9, 2008) - The National Gallery of Canada undertook a very detailed and comprehensive examination of its programs and activities for the preparation of its budget for 2008-09. There was a clear focus on preserving and strengthening the core activities, including acquisitions, of the Gallery while minimizing the impact on its workforce.

The Gallery can assure Canadians and its stakeholders that the reductions will not hinder the Gallery's ability to carry out its mandate. The Gallery has not made any changes to its Travelling exhibition program - On Tour. The Gallery remains committed to sharing the national collection with all Canadians. This program offers exhibitions and programs to museums across Canada.

The Gallery remains focused on the care of its collections and no area of the collection is at risk. There is senior expertise in all of the areas, including paper conservation, and the Conservation Department is larger than it has ever been. The adjustment in that area is in response to shifting priorities and a growing public interest in contemporary art in its various forms, Indigenous art and sculpture.
