Canada's New Government Announces Funding for the Dedication of Sgt. Tommy Prince MM Monument

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - June 8, 2007) - The Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, announced today a $2,000 contribution to the Sgt. Tommy Prince MM (Military Medal) Memorial Fund Committee. The funds, provided through Veterans Affairs Canada's Community Engagement Partnership Fund, will support the dedication of the Sgt. Tommy Prince MM Monument Sunday, June 10, in the Sgt. Tommy Prince MM Veterans Park. Joy Smith, Member of Parliament for Kildonan-St. Paul, will represent Minister Thompson during the dedication ceremony.

"The Sgt. Tommy Prince MM Monument stands in honour of one of Canada's most decorated Aboriginal soldiers," said Minister Thompson. "He was a brave man who fought for his country with great courage. Veterans Affairs is proud to be a part of the dedication of this monument."

The Sgt. Tommy Prince MM Veterans Park was built in memory of the Winnipeg "North-Enders", local Veterans who made the supreme sacrifice in the First World War, Second World War, Korean War and during peacekeeping missions.

"The legacy of Sgt. Tommy Prince will forever be honoured," said Donald Mackey, C.D., Chairperson for the Sgt. Tommy Prince MM Memorial Fund Committee. "As of this Sunday, the people of Winnipeg will be able to visit this tribute and commemorate a local hero, his achievements and sacrifice."

The Community Engagement Partnership Fund provides funding to non-profit groups, educational institutions and other organizations delivering remembrance activities and events. Administered through Veterans Affairs Canada's Canada Remembers program, contributions are made throughout the year and encompass both national and community-based events.
