Canada's New Government Announces Funding for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada

HALIFAX, NOVA SCOTIA--(Marketwire - Sept. 16, 2007) - The Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, announced today a contribution of up to $64,400 to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada over a two-year period. The funding, provided through Veterans Affairs Canada's Community Engagement Partnership Fund, will support an educational outreach program and national campaign entitled Everyday Heroes of Yesterday and Today.

"The heritage of our Veterans speaks to the very core of Canadian values and inspires us to greater things in our own lives," said Minister Thompson. "Canada's New Government is proud to partner with an organization that not only encourages adults to get involved in their communities, but that also strives to educate Canadian youth about the importance of remembrance."

During the ceremony, Minister Thompson joined Big and Little Brothers and Sisters in unveiling a poster highlighting the heroism of Veterans. The poster aims to encourage Canadians to consider how they might become heroes in their own community through involvement with the Big Brothers Big Sisters program. Plans to feature remembrance topics at the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada Youth Summit in July 2008 were also discussed.

"We are pleased and honoured to partner with Veteran Affairs on this project," said Bruce MacDonald, President and CEO, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada. "This partnership will allow the children in our programs the opportunity to reflect and understand the many contributions Veterans have made to our country."

The Community Engagement Partnership Fund provides funding to non-profit groups, educational institutions and other organizations delivering remembrance activities and events. Administered through Veterans Affairs Canada's Canada Remembers program, contributions are made throughout the year and encompass both national and community-based projects.
