Canada's New Government Invests $2.5 Million in Small Craft Harbours for the Avalon Area of Newfoundland and Labrador

FERRYLAND, NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR--(Marketwire - Aug. 10, 2007) - Fabian Manning, Member of Parliament for Avalon, today announced that Canada's New Government will invest $2.5 million for repairs and improvements at four fishing harbours in the Avalon area of Newfoundland and Labrador. Mr. Manning made the announcement on behalf of the Honourable Loyola Hearn, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans.

"Local fishers need access to well-maintained, operational harbours if they are to have successful fishing seasons," said Mr. Manning. "This important investment in harbour development and repair projects is vital to these southern shore communities and will go a long way to providing local fishers with the safe and accessible harbour facilities they need."

Today's announcement will benefit harbours in Portugal Cove South, Renews and Trepassey. A project at Fermeuse to reconstruct and extended the finger pier will also be completed this year.

The projects will be implemented by Fisheries and Oceans Canada, as part of its Small Craft Harbours Program, in co-operation with the local harbour authorities that manage and operate the facilities for the benefit of local users. Such close co-operation with clients allows the federal government to continue to provide an operable system of harbours and facilities throughout Canada in support of commercial fishers.

Portugal Cove South - As a result of damage caused by a storm last fall, a project to repair the existing breakwater wharf will occur at this harbour. Preliminary planning has been completed and the repairs are expected to be carried out this year.

Renews - The fishermen's wharf on the north side of the harbour has been damaged over time by wave agitation. A project to stabilize, repair, and provide additional protection for vessels will take place this year. The small boat basin development on the south side of the harbour will be completed with final dredging activity and the installation of floating docks.

Trepassey - A project to repair the finger pier, damaged during a storm in late 2006, will be undertaken at this harbour this year.

Fermeuse - A project to reconstruct and extend the finger pier which was announced in 2006 will be completed this year.
