Canada's New Government Provides over $24 Million to Assist Alberta with Flood Recovery

CALGARY, ALBERTA--(CCNMatthews - Jan. 3, 2007) - The Honourable Stockwell Day, Minister of Public Safety, today announced that Canada's new government is providing a final payment of $4.6 million to the Province of Alberta, under the Disaster Financial Assistance Arrangements (DFAA), for the June 2002 flood. This is in addition to a $20 million advance payment last November for flooding which occurred in June 2005.

"Canada's new government is taking action to help Alberta as it rebuilds public infrastructure and repairs uninsurable private property following severe flooding in 2002 and 2005," said Minister Day. "We will continue to work closely with the provinces and territories to assist Canadians when natural disasters strike," he added.

"The disastrous floods of 2002 and 2005 were significant events for many Alberta families," said Ray Danyluk, Minister of Alberta Municipal Affairs and Housing. "Our Emergency Management Alberta Agency works with the federal government to help and support Albertans who suffer uninsurable loss and damage through these or other disastrous events."

In June 2002 and 2005, the province of Alberta experienced severe weather in the southern and central regions. This caused overland flooding and damage to both private property and public infrastructure. Today's payment of $4.6 million represents the final federal contribution for this event. The advance payment of $20 million is in response to the 2005 flood. Additional DFAA payments for the 2005 flood will be made at the request of the province as further eligible provincial expenditures are identified.

Through the Disaster Financial Assistance Arrangements (DFAA), Canada's new government cost shares eligible provincial expenditures to help provincial governments meet the costs of disasters which exceed what they might reasonably be expected to bear on their own.
