Canada's New Government Supports Edmonton's Heritage Community Foundation

EDMONTON, ALBERTA--(CCNMatthews - Dec. 19, 2006) - On behalf of the Honourable Beverley J. Oda, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Status of Women, Laurie Hawn, Member of Parliament (Edmonton Centre) today announced $45,000 in funding for Edmonton's Heritage Community Foundation. Funding will be used to produce the Understanding Canadian Diversity and Multiculturalism Edukit in both official languages. This online learning resource on Canadian diversity and multiculturalism will include lesson plans and a range of student activities for elementary and secondary students.

"Every day, educators across Canada involve young people in the study of our country's history," said Minister Oda. "By making learning materials available to them on the Internet, we help ensure that Canada's next generation has a better knowledge of their past and are therefore better equipped to fully participate in our society."

"Canada's New Government is proud to support the Heritage Community Foundation," said Mr. Hawn. "The Understanding Canadian Diversity and Multiculturalism Edukit will be a wonderful resource for Alberta's teachers and students."

The Heritage Community Foundation is a charitable organization established in 1999 by the Alberta Museum Association, with a mandate of linking people with heritage through discovery and learning.

Canada's New Government will provide this funding through the Department of Canadian Heritage and its Canadian Studies Program. This program encourages Canadians to gain a better understanding of their country, its history, stories, people and systems of government. Specifically, it supports the development of learning materials and activities that help increase young Canadians' knowledge about Canada.
