Canada's New Government Supports Four Alberta Publishers

EDMONTON, ALBERTA--(CCNMatthews - Dec. 21, 2006) - On behalf of the Honourable Beverley J. Oda, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Status of Women, Rahim Jaffer, Member of Parliament (Edmonton-Strathcona), announced $511,357 in funding for four Alberta publishers this week. The funds will enable them to expand their promotional activities and reach new markets, as well as increase their financial viability.

"By supporting these Canadian publishers, Canada's New Government is helping our literature to flourish, ensuring that Canadians have access to high-quality books, and encouraging a wide audience for our culture at home and abroad," said Minister Oda.

"Our Government is pleased to support the efforts made by these publishers to produce, promote, and distribute Canadian-authored books," added Mr. Jaffer. "I encourage them to continue offering Canadian readers a wide range of books with which they can identify."

The following publishers will benefit from the funding announced this week: Folklore Publishing ($85,386), Lone Pine Media Productions ($312,680), Newest Publishers ($30,956), and University of Alberta Press ($82,335).

Canada's New Government has provided this funding under the Aid to Publishers and Supply Chain Initiative for Canada's book industry components of the Book Publishing Industry Development Program (BPIDP) of the Department of Canadian Heritage. BPIDP seeks to strengthen the capacity of the Canadian-owned and -controlled sector of the industry to publish and market Canadian books in both domestic and international markets.
