Canada's New Government Supports Musee du Fjord

LA BAIE, QUEBEC--(CCNMatthews - Dec. 1, 2006) - On behalf of Beverley J. Oda, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Status of Women, Jean-Pierre Blackburn, Minister of Labour, Minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada, and Member of Parliament (Jonquiere-Alma), today announced funding for La Baie's Musee du Fjord to help produce and present a travelling exhibit entitled "Microbes a la une!"

"Canada's New Government is committed to helping Canadians learn more about their rich collective heritage and increase their appreciation of it," said Minister Oda. "That is why I am proud to support an organization that highlights our natural, scientific, and historical heritage."

"Since its creation, the Musee du Fjord has occupied an important place in the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region," said Minister Blackburn. "This funding will support the Museum with its remarkable efforts to allow young people to have fun while they become familiar with the sciences and history."

The mission of the Musee du Fjord is to preserve and highlight the historical, natural, and artistic heritage of the Fjord-du-Saguenay and the Baie-des-Ha! Ha! area and its importance to the public. The "Microbes a la une!" exhibit will introduce primary and secondary students to the variety of microbes and their roles in our everyday life. The exhibit will be organized in collaboration with the Centre de production scientifique of the Musee de la nature et des sciences in Sherbrooke. After a stay at the Musee du Fjord, the exhibit will tour museums in Quebec, Alberta, and British Columbia.

Canada's new Government has provided $121,475 in funding through the Museum Assistance Program of the Department of Canadian Heritage. This program provides funding to Canadian museums and related institutions for projects that foster excellence in museum activities and that facilitate access to the treasures of our collective heritage.
