Canada's New Government Supports the New Brunswick Aboriginal Peoples Council

FREDERICTON, NEW BRUNSWICK--(CCNMatthews - Dec. 20, 2006) - On behalf of the Honourable Beverley J. Oda, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Status of Women, the Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Regional Minister for New Brunswick, today announced $154,236 in funding for the New Brunswick Aboriginal Peoples Council.

"Canada's New Government is committed to enabling Aboriginal people to participate in the social, political, economic, and cultural life of the country," said Minister Oda. "We are pleased to support the New Brunswick Aboriginal Peoples Council."

"Aboriginal people have a rich heritage in the province of New Brunswick," said Minister Greg Thompson. "This funding for the New Brunswick Aboriginal Peoples Council will ensure that Aboriginal people continue to have a voice in New Brunswick and across Canada."

Canada's New Government is providing this funding for the New Brunswick Aboriginal Peoples Council through the Representative Organizations programming element of the Aboriginal Peoples' Program of the Department of Canadian Heritage.

The Representative Organizations programming element of the Aboriginal Peoples' Program provides funding to Aboriginal organizations representing Metis, Non-Status Indian, and Inuit peoples through core funding for the Metis National Council, the Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami, and the Congress of Aboriginal Peoples, along with their affiliated provincial, regional, and territorial organizations.
