"Canada's Smartest Person" Finds Dream Business at The Franchise Show

Winner of CBC's "Canada's Smartest Person" competition is among franchisees who found business success at the Canadian Franchise Association's The Franchise Show, which comes to Calgary on February 7 & 8, 2015

CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwired - Jan. 28, 2015) - The Canadian Franchise Association (CFA) is shining a spotlight on Canadians who became franchise business owners after attending The Franchise Show (, Canada's largest showcase of franchise opportunities, which comes to Calgary on Saturday, February 7 and Sunday, February 8 at the Big Four Building at Calgary Stampede.

For Peter Dyakowski, a professional football player who recently won CBC's "Canada's Smartest Person" competition, franchising was a way to achieve his dreams of business ownership but with the support and resources of a proven brand behind him.

"Football doesn't last forever and I was interested in finding a business that I could invest in and build for the long term," he says. "My research found that buying a franchise business is a more secure path to small business success."

After researching franchise opportunities online and deciding he wanted to open a tutoring franchise, Dyakowski attended The Franchise Show. "I knew I needed to meet people face-to-face to really evaluate some of the opportunities I was looking at," he says.

At The Franchise Show, Dyakowski met a representative from supplemental education franchise Oxford Learning and is now a successful franchisee with the company, with one location in Hamilton, Ontario and a second centre opening soon. Dyakowski will be at the Oxford Learning booth at The Franchise Show in Calgary on February 7 and 8 and is excited to speak to attendees who have dreams of business ownership.

"Many Canadians dream of becoming small business owners but not everyone has the know-how or the original idea to start a business from scratch," says Lorraine McLachlan, CFA's President and CEO. "Through the proven business concept and the support provided by the franchisor, franchising can be a tremendous way for Canadians to achieve success as small business owners and The Franchise Show is the best venue to begin investigating franchise opportunities."
