Canada's Support for International Youth Day

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Aug. 11, 2007) - The Honourable Josee Verner, Minister of International Cooperation and Minister for La Francophonie and Official Languages, today reaffirmed Canada's support for International Youth Day and its theme for 2007, "Be Seen, Be Heard: Youth Participation for Development."

"All over the world, on a daily basis children and young people are showing they are eager and capable of taking part in matters that affect their lives." said Minister Verner. "The future lies with our young people's ability to become global citizens. We must find new ways to harness their energy and talents and help them participate in decisions affecting them."

Canada's New Government encourages young Canadians to become active global citizens through programs designed to increase their knowledge and understanding of international development and global interdependence, as well as the important role Canadians play in overseas relief and development efforts.

The Canadian International Development Agency's (CIDA) youth programming includes: cooperation with Canadian and international partners with common youth engagement goals; international youth internships; program funding to Canadian youth NGOs; development and delivery of educational resources and programs; outreach efforts in schools and communities; and, Internet-based activities.
