TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Aug. 18, 2014) - With 50 days until the 2014 Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure, Paint Canada Pink Week begins the countdown with a week of fun activities.

Paint Canada Pink Week kicks off August 18th to encourage participation in and fundraising for the CIBC Run for the Cure, Canada's largest single-day event in support of breast cancer research, health education and advocacy programs. The 2014 CIBC Run for the Cure takes place on Sunday, October 5th in 65 communities across Canada.

Paint Canada Pink Week activities are led by volunteers and range from yoga and zumba in the park, to storefront decorating contests, to ceremonial flag raisings.

"Since the mid-1980's the breast cancer mortality rate has decreased by 43%," says Jane Parsons, co-CEO of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, CIBC Run for the Cure. "We've made great strides, but we can't stop now. By taking part in Paint Canada Pink Week, and the CIBC Run for the Cure, Canadians from coast to coast are helping to create a future without breast cancer."

With the funds raised at the CIBC Run for the Cure, the Foundation continues to invest in relevant and innovative research that aims to reduce the incidence of breast cancer, lower mortality rates and support those who have been affected by a breast cancer diagnosis. Funding recipients have made tremendous progress like identifying genetic mutations responsible for higher risk of breast cancer; improving imaging and screening techniques to detect tumours as early as possible; and improving treatments like surgery and radiation, so that patients spend less time in the hospital and experience fewer side effects, while still gaining the long-term survival benefits of effective treatment.

"CIBC is proud to join the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation to celebrate Paint Canada Pink Week to kick-off the countdown to this year's CIBC Run for the Cure," says Christina Kramer Executive Vice-President and CIBC's Executive Run Sponsor. "We can't stop now. Breast cancer continues to affect one in nine women in Canada and touches the lives of so many families every day. We are so grateful to the 130,000 Canadians who join us each year for the CIBC Run for the Cure to help change this."

If you know someone impacted by breast cancer, this is your opportunity to start or join a team, or support a friend or colleague through a donation. To find a Run site near you, visit CIBCrunforthecure.com.
