Canadian Cancer Society: Patches of Hope Quilt Auction Raises $54,000 for Cancer Research and Patient Support

REGINA, SASKATCHEWAN--(CCNMatthews - Oct. 21, 2005) - The Canadian Cancer Society is the benefactor of $54,000 raised at the Patches of Hope Quilt Auction on October 13th at Queensbury Convention Centre. Half of these proceeds will be used for patient support here in Saskatchewan through the CancerConnection program and the remainder for cancer research.

A sell-out crowd of 700 attended the auction, which was hosted by Gabrielle Miller and Janet Wright of Corner Gas. Quilters from Saskatchewan and beyond donated an array of 108 beautiful stitched pieces, including full-sized quilts, wall hangings and lap quilts. An additional 30 items were donated by businesses for the silent auction.

Volunteer auctioneer Dwayne Bender led the live bidding action. Several of the celebrity quilters were on hand to assist with the auctioning of the Patches of Hope Celebrity Quilt which sold for a record-breaking $3,000. The Corner Gas wall hanging, created by members of the cast on location, was claimed for $1,200.

"The committee set $33,000 as our goal for the 2005 event," said Brenda Caswell, Chair of the Patches of Hope 2005 Quilt Auction, "With the spectacular results achieved, we now have a four-year total of $121,000. Patches of Hope has received tremendous support from quilters and the community at large. It's rewarding for people to know that they have made a difference by joining together and sharing their talents."

Generous donations from corporate sponsors helped to make this year's auction a reality. The Patches of Hope Quilt Auction committee acknowledges the kind support of its major sponsors including Sask Central, Brown Communications Group, Regina Exhibition Park, Farm Credit Corporation, The Co-operators, Data Business Forms, Northgate Sewing/Peachtree Heirlooms and Global Television Network.

Appreciation is also extended to the Bronze level sponsors: Dwayne Bender - Auctioneer, GES Canada, Homespun Quilting, Imagination Ink, Regina Leader-Post, and Saskatchewan Weekly Newspapers Association.
