The Canadian Coast Guard and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans celebrated the return to service of the Canadian Coast Guard Ship Bartlett today.

"Our community is pleased to welcome the Bartlett back home," said the Honourable Gary Lunn, Minister of State (Sport) and Member of Parliament (Saanich-Gulf Islands). "Renewed vessels help ensure that the Canadian Coast Guard has the equipment needed to continue keeping our waters safe, accessible, and secure."

The Government of Canada's Economic Action Plan provided the funding for the revitalization of CCGS Bartlett and will ensure the vessel remains in service for the next ten years. In total, approximately $21.9 million was invested in the Bartlett , including $18.6 million in contracted work to Allied Shipbuilders Ltd.

"Our Government's Economic Action Plan makes significant contributions to coastal communities across the country," said the Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans. "By committing to build ships in Canada our government is ensuring that our marine industry continues to create economic opportunities for Canadians for generations to come."

At its home port of Victoria, CCGS Bartlett makes a valuable contribution to its community. The vessel is one of the Canadian Coast Guard's medium endurance, multi-tasked vessels. Its primary duties include tending to aids to navigation, lighthouse resupply, search and rescue operations, and fisheries enforcement.

As a part of Canada's Economic Action Plan, the Government of Canada is investing $175 million in the Canadian Coast Guard to procure 68 new small vessels, 30 environmental barges, and to undertake major repair work on 40 of its largest vessels, including the Bartlett.
