Canadian Construction Association Supports Efforts to Assist American Construction Workers Displaced by Hurricane Katrina

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Sept. 14, 2005) - Following weekend meetings with senior representatives of the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC), representatives of the Canadian Construction Association (CCA) today announced that they will be actively supporting an initiative spearheaded by the AGC to assist construction workers displaced by Hurricane Katrina. According to the American Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were some 275,000 people employed in construction in the states of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. Although the exact numbers of displaced construction workers is unknown, thousands of construction workers are known to be without income, homes, or basic possessions.

Under the AGC program, displaced construction workers will be identified via local networks in the affected area. Donations will be collected under a special "Hurricane Katrina Construction Workers Fund", which will then be used to provide financial assistance to those identified construction personnel.

As for reconstruction efforts in the affected areas, representatives of the AGC informed CCA that serious reconstruction efforts will not begin for several months. However, once reconstruction efforts are set to begin, a working group will be established with representation from the Canadian Construction Association to determine the appropriate role of Canadian contractors in reconstruction efforts.

"The Canadian Construction Association believes this to be an excellent vehicle by which Canadian construction companies and individuals can donate to fellow construction families in the affected areas," stated Michael Atkinson, President of the Canadian Construction Association. "As people who will be front and centre in the rebuilding efforts in the months to come, it is essential that construction workers in the Gulf Coast area be provided such assistance".
