Canadian Firms Remain Globally Competitive Through International R&D Network

The National Research Council of Canada extends access to EUREKA until 2018

OTTAWA, CANADA--(Marketwired - July 22, 2015) - Canada's associate membership in EUREKA was renewed by John R. McDougall, President of the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) during a ceremony in Lugano, Switzerland earlier this month, giving Canadian innovators access to the international network for market-driven industrial research and development until 2018.

The signing took place July 1st, also marking EUREKA's 30th anniversary. President McDougall was joined by Her Excellency Jennifer MacIntyre, Canada's new Ambassador to Switzerland and Liechtenstein and EUREKA senior officials, including Bruno H. Moor, Chairman Delegate of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Education and Research.

Through the National Research Council (Canada's EUREKA National Office) and EUREKA, Canadian companies can easily connect with their counterparts (as well as research centres, universities and other innovators) throughout the world as they pursue industrial research and development. These connections enable partners to get their products to market in fast and flexible ways-ahead of the competition.

Quick Facts

  • In only 3 years, Canada's associate membership in EUREKA has provided approximately 50 firms with the opportunity to pursue innovative projects, with a combined value of over $50 million, with international partners.
  • Established in 1985, EUREKA serves as an international network to coordinate national funding sources between international project partners in order to accelerate innovations in new technologies, products and services for commercialization.
  • Membership in EUREKA now includes 40 economies which have generated over 5,700 industrial projects representing over thirty-six billion euros (C$50B) of public and private financing.
  • EUREKA participates in almost 200 projects a year, with results spanning navigation systems, leading-edge medical devices, novel ways of generating energy and even software for film special effects.

"Since Canada joined EUREKA in 2012, close to fifty Canadian innovators, mostly small and medium-sized firms have used the network to pursue more than forty projects with international partners. These projects are valued at over $50 million. Our participation helps Canada fulfill its commitment to better position firms in new markets and to leverage R&D funds for market-oriented products and services."

John R. McDougall, President of the National Research Council of Canada

"Canada has become a valued and reliable member of EUREKA. For EUREKA members in Europe, having Canada around the table is providing a critical reach into the North American market with mutually beneficial results."

Bruno Moor, Swiss Chair of EUREKA Chairman Delegate of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Education and Research
