Canadian Forces Liaison Council Honours 2013 National Employer Support Award Recipients

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - June 7, 2013) - Eighteen business and academic organizations from across Canada were recognized today for their outstanding support to members of the Canadian Armed Forces Reserves.

"The men and women of the Reserves are an invaluable part of Canada's military family," said the Honourable Peter Mackay, Minister of National Defence. "Thanks to the work of Canada's employers and educational institutions, and the support of advocates across the country, it is becoming easier for Reservists to help serve our nation and protect our values."

"Reservists continue to rely on the support of employers and educators to deploy on domestic and international operations or to undergo military training," said Miller Ayre, National Vice-Chair of the Canadian Forces Liaison Council and publisher emeritus of The Telegram in St. John's, Newfoundland. "Without that support, Reservists could not train to the level required to meet the operational needs of the Canadian Armed Forces, both at home and abroad."

Vice-Admiral Bruce Donaldson, Vice Chief of the Defence Staff, and other senior National Defence officials were among the more than 150 guests in attendance as the Canadian Forces Liaison Council presented the Tenth Biennial Employer Support Awards. Retired veteran journalist Don Newman served as master of ceremonies for the event, which was held amidst the historic military collection of the Canadian War Museum's LeBreton Gallery.

"The support of employers and educational institutions for the Reserves remains of paramount importance," noted Rear-Admiral Jennifer Bennett, Chief Reserves and Cadets. "This event is our opportunity to celebrate the outstanding commitment and sacrifice organizations have made to Canada's Reserve personnel and to the Canadian Armed Forces as a whole."
