Canadian Forces Participate in City of Quebec's 400th Anniversary Celebrations

MONTREAL, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - Sept. 24, 2007) - Brigadier-General Christian Barabe, Commander Land Force Quebec Area and Joint Task Force (East), together with the Honourable Josee Verner, Minister of Canadian Heritage, Status of Women, and Official Languages, today announced the 2008 military program for the 400th anniversary of the founding of the City of Quebec. The City of Quebec has one of the most interesting military histories in North America, integrally linked to that of today's Canadian Forces. The announcement was made at a press conference held on the Plains of Abraham at 1 p.m.

"Canada's New Government is a proud partner to the City of Quebec 400th anniversary celebrations," said Minister Verner. "In 2008, Quebec City residents will join together as the City of Quebec celebrates its 400th anniversary and its rich historic and military past. I invite all Canadians to take part in the celebrations and highlight the founding of the first Canadian city, the birth place of French civilization in North America."

"While Canada's military is renowned for its contributions internationally, the events planned in commemoration of Quebec's 400th anniversary remind us of our military's long tradition of contributing here at home," said the Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence and Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency. "From natural disasters such as floods or the ice storm, to search and rescue, thousands of Canadian Forces personnel stand ready to assist fellow Canadians in times of need. Our service men and women are proud to be part of next year's events."

"Since the founding of Quebec, military members have contributed, and still contribute, to the collective well being of their community," said Brigadier-General Barabe. "We proudly celebrate a military heritage that is part of the history of many Quebec families."

The Canadian Forces in Quebec will celebrate next year's events in cooperation with many other federal government departments and in coordination with the Societe du 400e anniversaire de la fondation de la Ville de Quebec throughout 2008.
