Canadian Heritage: Appointment to Canada Council for the Arts

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - April 24, 2009) - The Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, today announced the appointment of Rosemary L. Vodrey as a member of the Canada Council for the Arts.

"I would like to welcome Ms. Vodrey to the Canada Council for the Arts," said Minister Moore. "I know that her extensive experience with the Manitoba community, her remarkable leadership, and her in-depth knowledge of cultural affairs management will be tremendous assets to the Canada Council for the Arts."

Ms. Vodrey represented citizens of the Fort Garry riding in the Manitoba Legislative Assembly from 1990 to 1999. She held positions including Minister of the Treasury Board and Minister of Culture, Heritage and Citizenship. In this capacity, she was responsible for Manitoba's Council for the Arts from 1997 to 1999. Earlier in her career, she worked as a school psychologist at the Child Guidance Clinic and as a host for CJOB, a Manitoba information radio station.

Ms. Vodrey plays an active role in her community. She is a member of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet's Board of Directors and of the Western Canada Aviation Museum's finance committee. Ms. Vodrey has an educational background in psychology and law.

The Canada Council for the Arts promotes the study, enjoyment, and production of works in the arts by providing assistance to individual artists and arts organizations through a peer assessment process. It also administers the Public Lending Right program of payments to authors, coordinates the development of UNESCO activities in Canada, and coordinates Canadian participation in UNESCO activities abroad.
