Canadian Heritage: Canada's New Government Supports the Salon du Livre du Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean

JONQUIERE, QUEBEC--(CCNMatthews - Dec. 8, 2006) - On behalf of the Honourable Beverley J. Oda, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Status of Women, the Honourable Jean-Pierre Blackburn, Minister of Labour, Minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec, and Member of Parliament (Jonquiere-Alma), today announced funding for the Salon du livre du Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean. The funds will help with the organization of the 2007 Salon du Livre.

"Canada's new Government is proud to support an event that celebrates our writers and gives Canadians an opportunity to discover the quality and diversity of literary works produced across the country," said Minister Oda.

"I congratulate everyone involved in organizing the Salon du livre du Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean on the excellent job they have done over the past 40 years," said Minister Blackburn. "Every year, this wonderful celebration of the written word attracts thousands of visitors, bringing important economic and cultural benefits to our region."

The Salon du livre du Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean offers a wide variety of activities to bring members of the general public together with writers from around the region, throughout the province of Quebec, and across the country. The Salon helps writers gain recognition and helps make books more accessible to readers.

Canada's new Government provided $42,000 in funding through the Collective Initiatives component of the Book Publishing Industry Development Program. This program of the Department of Canadian Heritage aims to strengthen the capacity of the Canadian-owned and -controlled sector of the industry to publish and market Canadian books in both domestic and international markets.
