Canadian Heritage: Statement

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - March 3, 2008) -

By the Honourable Josee Verner
Minister of Canadian Heritage, Status of Women
and Official Languages

Death of Jeff Healey

On behalf of the Government of Canada, I would like to express my deepest sympathies to the family and friends of celebrated musician Jeff Healey. An award-winning Canadian blues and jazz artist, Mr. Healey was admired across Canada and around the world.

Jeff Healey, who lost his sight to cancer when he was very young, developed his unique playing style early on. Throughout his career, he received many accolades for his talent and musical ability. The Jeff Healey Band won a Juno Award for Canadian Entertainer of the Year in 1990, and was also nominated for a Grammy award. He shared his love of music, especially jazz, as the host of CBC Radio's My Kind of Jazz.

As Minister of Canadian Heritage, Status of Women and Official Languages, I join with all Canadians in mourning the loss of Jeff Healey. His generous spirit and musical legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
