Canadian Independent Medical Clinics Association: Independent Medical Clinics Open Dialogue on a European Health Care Model; Saving Medicare Conference to Tackle Supreme Court Decision

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(CCNMatthews - July 25, 2005) - The Canadian Independent Medical Clinics Association (CIMCA) is a new organization, whose mission is to support high quality patient care and improve health care access for all Canadians.

In the wake of the recent Supreme Court of Canada decision in the Chaoulli-Zeliotis appeal, CIMCA will hold a national conference in Vancouver on November 11 - 12, 2005. The goal of the conference is to develop a practical blueprint for health care reform in Canada.

"CIMCA is the first medical association in the country to encourage dialogue on a European style universal system, where both public and private sectors work together to eliminate wait lists and patient suffering through timely access to high quality care," said Dr. Brian Day, President of CIMCA.

"The Supreme Court decision has affirmed a citizen's right to protect their own health care," said Day. "CIMCA's conference will examine how the same rights can be applied across the country, while maintaining universality of care."

The health care summit - Saving Medicare: Strategies and Solutions - will bring together approximately 20 experts to explore the social, legal, political, fiscal and economic implications of the Supreme Court decision in both Quebec and other provinces.

"Medicare is stretched to the limit and cannot survive without reform," said Zoltan Nagy, Executive Vice-President of CIMCA. "The conference will shed light on how we can help the public system by relieving the pressure of waiting lists and reducing the financial stress of rising health care costs facing all provinces."

Confirmed speakers and panelists from Europe and New Zealand include Charles Auld, Bruce Davidson and Johan Hjertqvist, and from North America, Mary Anne Bobinski (Dean of Law, UBC), Jacques Chaoulli MD, Brian Day MD, Nadeem Esmail, Ida Goodreau (President and CEO, Vancouver Coastal Health), Peter Hogg Q.C., Senator Michael Kirby, Preston Manning, William Orovan MD, Sally Pipes (Pacific Research Institute), Marvin Storrow Q.C., Les Vertesi MD (Health Council of Canada), John Williamson (Canadian Taxpayers Federation).
