Canadian Innovation Awards Application Deadline September 15-Apply Now!

MISSISSAUGA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Sept. 9, 2008) - The federal political parties may not be addressing innovation so far in this election campaign, but Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters is putting it at the top of its priority list for the fall agenda.

Canada's leading trade and industry association needs the best and brightest innovative companies in the nation to apply for its prestigious Canadian Innovation Awards by September 15.

"Recognizing the innovative excellence of Canadian companies is a critical part of furthering Canada's innovation agenda," says Innovation Awards Host, John Manley, now counsel with McCarthy Tetrault.

The awards, entering their eighth consecutive year, honour excellence of top Canadian companies who are leading the innovation charge in their field. Categories include: Manufacturer of the Year; Global Business of the Year; Innovative New Technology; SME Innovator of the Year; Productivity Enhancement and Business Takes Action Innovator of the Year.

Canada is responsible for giving the world some of the best innovations in history including the BlackBerry, the snowmobile, JAVA, the telephone, garbage bag and insulin.

"The innovative spirit of the Canadian psyche," says Jeff Brownlee, CME vice president of public affairs. "We are innovative, but we don't do a great job of telling the world about our successes. We also lack a culture of commercialization in Canada. In the new economy, Canadian innovators must focus on research and development that leads profit."

Everyone knows Thomas Edison invented the lightbulb, correct? No, in fact it was a pair of Canadians that did that four years before Edison commercialized it.

"We have to do better. We have to innovate the way we approach innovation in this nation. We have to be faster. We need to be stronger," adds Brownlee.

And that begins with sharing the great Canadian innovation success stories like the Canadian Innovation Award winners.

"The winners of the Canadian Innovation Awards are models of excellence for others to emulate," says Brownlee. "We live in a competitive world, but nothing gives Canadians a greater sense of pride when Canadians take on the world and win."
