Canadian Maritime Coastal Defence Vessels Celebrate Canada Day in Toronto

HALIFAX, NOVA SCOTIA--(Marketwire - June 27, 2008) - Her Majesty's Canadian Ships (HMCS) Glace Bay, Summerside and Shawinigan will be in Toronto for the Canada Day weekend.

Residents and Visitors are invited to tour the ships during the following days and times:

Saturday, June 28 - 12:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Sunday, June 29 - 12:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.; and

Tuesday, July 1 - 12:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.

The Canadian Maritime Coastal Defence Vessels (MCDVs) will stop in Toronto as part of a training deployment in the Great Lakes. This will allow Canadians the opportunity to see what the Navy has to offer in terms of employment and as a way of life, as well as an opportunity to interact with crewmembers.

MCDVs are vital for maintaining our sovereignty and protecting our shores, offer an economical alternative to major surface units for routine, yet important, patrolling duties. Their size and shallow draught of 3.05 meters make them well suited for sailing into small ports, harbours or coves. The ships can reach speeds of approximately 15 knots and have a range of 5,000 nautical miles. They are multi-role ships that can be fitted with inter-changeable modules supporting a wide variety of missions including general naval operations and exercises, as well as specialty work such as seabed mapping.
