Canadian Museum of Civilization to Become Canadian Museum of History

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Oct. 16, 2012) - Earlier today, the Minister of Canadian Heritage, the Honourable James Moore, announced that the Canadian Museum of Civilization would become the Canadian Museum of History and enter into enhanced partnerships with museums across the country. This will introduce "a new process linking Canada's network of museums to the Canadian Museum of History so Canadians in all regions of the country have better access to our shared history."

The Ontario Museum Association (OMA) welcomes the initiative to strengthen partnerships among museums in Ontario and across the country. "Ontario's story is told by the more than 600 museums and heritage institutions across our province" said Marie Lalonde, Executive Director of the Ontario Museum Association. "As we look to engage Ontarians and Canadians with innovative approaches, we welcome the opportunity to explore new ways that museums may work with each other. As we learn more, we look forward to the potential that the new strategic directions announced by Minister Moore will offer Ontarians."

Mark O'Neill, President and CEO, Canadian Museum of Civilization Corporation, will be sharing further thoughts on these developments as guest presenter at the OMA Annual Conference on Friday, October 19th in Niagara Falls.

Ontario's 600 + community museums often partner with larger agencies, such as the Canadian Museum of History, to offer their visitors distinctive exhibits and initiatives that would otherwise not be available. The OMA understands that the new directions announced today may offer greater opportunity to do this.
