Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission: Notice of Public Hearing

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Nov. 27, 2006) - The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) will hold a one-day public hearing on the Environmental Assessment Guidelines regarding Ontario Power Generation Inc.'s (OPG) proposal for the refurbishment and life extension of the Pickering B nuclear generating station located in the City of Pickering, Ontario.

Public hearings follow the agenda published prior to the hearing date.

A Screening Environmental Assessment of the proposed project must be conducted pursuant to the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act (CEAA) before the CNSC can proceed with a decision on a licence application from OPG.

Draft Environmental Assessment Guidelines (EA Guidelines) were issued for public comment on September 5, 2006, and the comment period closed on October 13, 2006. The revised EA Guidelines, taking public comments into account, and OPG's submission will be made available to the public on November 27, 2006.

The public is invited to comment on the revised EA Guidelines. Requests to intervene must be filed with the Secretary of the Commission by December 22, 2006 at the address below. The request must include the following information, as per the CNSC Rules of Procedure:

- a written submission of the comments to be presented to the Commission;

- a statement setting out whether the requester wishes to intervene by way of written submission only or by way of written submission and oral presentation; and

- name, address and telephone of the requester.
