Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission: Notice of Public Hearing, ref. 2007-H-05

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Jan. 9, 2007) - The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) will hold a one-day public hearing on the application by Hydro-Quebec to build and operate new radioactive waste and irradiated fuel management structures. The structures would be located at the Gentilly-2 site in Becancour, Quebec.

One-Day Hearing: March 7, 2007
Place: CNSC Public Hearing Room, 14th floor,
280 Slater Street, Ottawa, Ontario

Public hearings follow the agenda published prior to the hearing date.

Hydro-Quebec advised the CNSC that a new storage area will be needed to accommodate solid radioactive waste produced by the Gentilly-2 nuclear generating station's continued operation and potential refurbishment. Hydro-Quebec's project also includes increasing the existing Irradiated Fuel Dry Storage Area's storage capacity to meet requirements until 2035. An authorization to proceed with this project would require an amendment to Hydro-Quebec's current waste facility operating licence.

CNSC staff and Hydro-Quebec's submissions to be considered at this hearing will be available as of January 8, 2007.

The public is invited to comment on Hydro-Quebec's application for a licence amendment. Requests to intervene must be filed with the Secretary of the Commission by February 5, 2007 at the address below. The request must include the following information, as per the CNSC Rules of Procedure:

- a written submission of the comments to be presented to the Commission;

- a statement setting out whether the requester wishes to intervene by way of written submission only or by way of written submission and oral presentation; and

- name, address and telephone of the requester.

Agendas and information on the public hearing process, including how to participate in public hearings, are available at the CNSC Web site: www.nuclearsafety.gc.ca. Hearing documents (submissions) are not available on-line and must be requested through the Secretariat at the address below:
