A practical, concise and readable guide to managing obesity in a clinical setting, Best Weight is a synthesis of reliable evidence and the authors' extensive experience managing patients coping with excess weight. The book is the ideal resource for physicians, dietitians and other health professionals looking for insights and actionable information for helping patients shed pounds safely, sensibly and sustainably.

"Best Weight was conceived quite deliberately to be a quick read," says Dr. Arya M. Sharma, Scientific Director of CON-RCO. "It's not a text book, and it's not a literature review. Rather, it's meant to give health providers a holistic and practical overview of how to manage patients, from the first consultation and beyond.

"It answers only one question – what can I do for this patient, today?"

The book covers a wide variety of topics ranging from waiting room design through to proper clinical assessment, treatment options and common barriers to treatment success.

"As we say in Best Weight, we shouldn't have had to write this book," explains co-author Dr. Yoni Freedhoff, medical director for the Bariatric Medical Institute in Ottawa, ON. "Obesity is the second most preventable cause of death in Canada, and it's a major drain on health care resources and the economy. Despite this, health practitioners aren't trained in any meaningful way on how to manage obesity in a clinical setting. The disconnect means Canadians who need to lose weight have few legitimate resources to turn to."

It is estimated that almost 60% of Canadian adults and 26% of children and adolescents are overweight, while one in four adults are obese, as are 10% of boys and 9% of girls. Overweight individuals are at increased risk for type 2 diabetes, hypertension, coronary artery disease, stroke, osteoarthritis and cancer. One in 10 premature deaths among Canadian adults aged 20–64 years is directly attributable to overweight and obesity.

CON-RCO was founded in 2006 to link the research, policy and practice communities to advance the development and delivery of effective obesity prevention and treatment solutions.
