Canadian Red Cross: Banks to Collect Funds for New Brunswick Flood Response

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - May 12, 2008) - The Canadian Red Cross announced today that cash donations to help people affected by the New Brunswick flood will be accepted at nine financial institutions across Canada. Funds raised will assist Red Cross in providing those people affected by the current flood disaster with basic necessities such as food, clothing and personal care items. Cash donations will be accepted until June 13, 2008 at the following financial institutions:

---------------------------------------------------
BMO Financial Group National Bank of Canada
---------------------------------------------------
Canadian Western Bank RBC
---------------------------------------------------
CIBC Scotiabank
---------------------------------------------------
HSBC Bank Canada TD Canada Trust
---------------------------------------------------
Laurentian Bank of Canada
---------------------------------------------------

The water levels are going down, but some people simply no longer have a home to return to, or they are waiting for official approval to go home. Some are seeking Red Cross support because they can't live in a home with a flooded basement and no electricity or running water.

"Canadians from coast to coast have responded in support of their eastern neighbours in New Brunswick. The participation of the banks in Canada makes it even easier for Canadians to make donations at any of the nine financial institutions," said Tim Hoswitschka, National Corporate Relations Director, Canadian Red Cross.

The Canadian Red Cross is using the donations to assist individuals by providing shelter, food, clothing, water testing kits, technical inspection information, and information on how to make a claim to the Province's Disaster Financial Assistance program through outreach posts. With the assistance of donations, the Red Cross will also provide long term support for individuals who are facing severe hardship following this disaster.

Since the devastating flood struck New Brunswick in April, Red Cross has registered over 850 residents, and is providing shelter and food to 283 people. More than 100 Red Cross personnel have been activated to respond.

Canadians wishing to help people affected by flooding are encouraged to contribute by donating online, at one of the nine financial institutions, calling 1-800-418-1111 or contacting their local Red Cross office. Cheques should be made payable to the Canadian Red Cross, earmarked "Flood Appeal 2008" and mailed to the Canadian Red Cross National Office, 170 Metcalfe Street, Suite 300, Ottawa, Ontario, K2P 2P2.
