A little taste of Canada will soon find its way to the Tuscan villas of Italy. Craft brewing pioneer Frank Heaps of Upper Canada and Steam Whistle Brewing is joined with famed restaurateur Alida Solomon and real estate expert James Estrin to create an unparalleled Canadian-owned venture that includes an on-site artisanal (craft) brewery, brewpub, boutique hotel and restaurant.

Craft Brewing

Pioneered by Heaps' Upper Canada, the craft brewing industry began in the late 1980's, and since then craft beer represents more than 10 per cent of the Canadian and American beer markets - a trend in Italy where artisanal beers are dramatically increasing in demand.

The beer industry in Italy closely mirrors that of Canada, the U.S. and most countries around the world. The vast majority of consumers favour lagers and pilsners and a rapidly growing segment of the market (in particular Italy) is attracted to different, more interesting, complex and flavourful artisanal brews. Assisted by the experience of one of Canada's most successful craft breweries, Steam Whistle Brewing, Tutti Matti Tuscany's Birra dei Matti ("beer of the crazies") will enter that specialized/craft beer market and will have, as its core product, a fine European pilsner; while also producing a variety of flavoured specialty beer. Growth will come primarily from the more discerning beer consumer (those that are radically switching their tastes from mass produced national/international brands to a craft brewed pilsner).
