Candidate for City Council Takes a Stand against Vandals

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Oct. 30, 2006) - Toronto City Council may turn a blind eye to graffiti and vandals, but not if this candidate is elected! Erica Maier, candidate for City Council, will show media some of the appalling graffiti located in Ward 32.

Please join us for a look at some of the graffiti that has desecrated the area and view a demonstration of its removal. At 1:00 p.m. November 1st at Bowles Pharmacy, on the southwest corner of Kingston Road and Main Street.

Maier has contacted Toronto Police Graffiti squad and Metro Graffiti Services in a bid to get this problem rectified. A public forum has been set up for November 8th at the St. John's Norway Church. Information bulletin is attached.

Maier has big plans for Ward 32, including hiring a team of professionals that will work to purge the problem before it can escalate. This follows the "broken window" theory of fixing small problems before they become large problems. This has been put into practice in Vancouver, Calgary and Winnipeg, but not in Toronto.

The city of Winnipeg has run a successful graffiti program using a chit system which allows property owners to receive free paint or to have professional services come and clean up marked areas. http://www.winnipeg.ca/publicworks/Engineering/Graffiti.asp

We must follow through by adopting tougher laws and creating more constructive outlets for youth. Only when these changes are in place will we begin to see positive results for Toronto.

Graffiti, done without the owner's permission is not art, it's a CRIME!

Looking Forward to Seeing You at 1:00 p.m.
