Candlelight Vigil and Memorial Monument to Honour Province's Victims of Impaired Driving

GRAND FALLS-WINDSOR, NL--(Marketwired - June 11, 2015) - MADD Canada's Newfoundland and Labrador Chapters and Community Leaders are hosting a special Candlelight Service of Hope and Remembrance this Saturday, June 13, to pay tribute to victims of impaired driving.

Family and friends of those who have been killed in impaired driving crashes, and people who have themselves been injured, will take part in the candlelight service at the College of the North Atlantic in Grand Falls-Windsor. Following that, guests will congregate at nearby Centennial Park for a commemorative ceremony at the Provincial Monument, which has been engraved with the names of new victims.

Attending the service to show their support to victims, family and friends will be: Grand Falls-Windsor Mayor Alan Hawkins; Federal MP Scott Simms, Bonavista-Gander-Grand Falls; MHA Paul Lane, Mount Pearl South: Inspector Terry Corbin, Royal Newfoundland Constabulary; Royal Canadian Mounted Police; the Grand Falls Windsor Municipal Police Service and Fire Service; MADD Canada's National President Angeliki Souranis; and MADD Canada Victim Services Manager Gloria Appleby.

"The memorial monument is a beautiful and moving tribute to those who have been so tragically affected by impaired driving," said MADD Canada National President Angeliki Souranis. "It also serves as a reminder to everyone about the terrible toll that impaired driving takes, and the need to do more to stop it."

The Provincial Monument for victims of impaired driving was initiated by the members of the MADD Exploits Valley Chapter. With generous sponsorship from Central Funeral Homes and Nelson Monuments, and with the kind approval by the Town of Grand Falls-Windsor for use of the site, the Provincial Monument for victims of impaired driving was first unveiled in 2011.
