CanNor Creates Jobs and Improves Community Infrastructure Across the Northwest Territories

YELLOWKNIFE, NORTHWEST TERRITORIES--(Marketwire - Jan. 22, 2013) - Today, the Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of Health, Minister of the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor), and Minister for the Arctic Council, announced federal investments for five projects in the Northwest Territories to help build stronger northern communities.

"Our Government is proud to contribute to projects that will help create sustainable, healthy and prosperous northern communities," said Minister Aglukkaq. "In collaboration with our partners, this investment will improve our community infrastructure and create jobs for Northerners."

Federal funding of more than $1.1 million is being provided through the Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF). The NWT projects include renovations to the Northern Frontier Visitors Centre in Yellowknife; upgrades and expansion of Kitti Hall, Tuktoyaktuk's community centre; upgrades to the Father Leonce DeHurtevant Arena in Paulatuk; renovations and repairs to the historic Tl'oondih Lodge in Fort McPherson; and renovations to the swimming pool in Fort Simpson.

"The Northern Frontier Visitors Association is excited to be working with the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency to provide much needed repairs and upgrades to the Visitors Centre," said Colin Dempsey, President of the Northern Frontier Visitors Association. "These improvements will improve the quality of the visitor experience, reduce our operating expenses, and make our building and our association more environmentally responsible."

Investment in this project is made possible through the Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF), a national program delivered across Canada over two years to rehabilitate or improve existing community infrastructure. The CIIF will help to achieve the Government of Canada's priorities to promote long-term growth and prosperity in Canada's economy, create jobs; and improve the quality of life of communities.

CanNor is delivering CIIF in Nunavut, the Northwest Territories and Yukon.
