CanNor Gives Boost to Nunavut Fisheries

IQALUIT, NUNAVUT--(Marketwire - March 10, 2011) - A Nunavut fisheries initiative will lead to new economic opportunities for fishers and businesses, as a result of an investment from the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency.

The Honourable John Duncan, Minister of the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor) today announced funding of $118,450 towards a new marketing strategy for Nunavut's fishing industry. With contributions from the Government of Nunavut's Department of Environment and industry, the total value of the project is $206,450.

In addition to a marketing and branding strategy, this project will be used to establish an industry association to ensure a coordinated approach. It will also include a new trade show booth and promotional literature, which will debut at the International Boston Seafood Show, the largest of its kind in North America.

"The Government of Canada is proud to contribute to this project which will help create new national and international consumer demand for Nunavut's high quality seafood," said Minister Duncan, who is also Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians. "Strengthening the profile of the fishery will help to build a more diversified and sustainable economy in Nunavut."

"The fishing industry is an important part of Nunavut's economy as it provides a valuable source of employment and income," said the Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Member of Parliament for Nunavut, Regional Minister for the North and Minister of Health. "This new marketing strategy and brand will develop Nunavut's fisheries which will contribute to prosperity in many Nunavut communities."

"The Government of Nunavut is very pleased to work with CanNor on this very important initiative for the development of our fishing industry," said the Honorable Daniel Shewchuk, Minister of Environment for the Government of Nunavut. "The branding and marketing of Nunavut's fishery will help to distinguish our high quality products in local, national and international markets."

This investment is made possible through CanNor's Strategic Investments in Northern Economic Development (SINED) program, which focuses on long-term economic growth, economic diversification and capacity building in all three territories.

SINED is one of several economic development programs within CanNor. CanNor is responsible for coordinating and delivering Canada's economic development across the North, and for related policy development, research and advocacy.
