CanNor Helps Strengthen Yukon's Broadcast Infrastructure

WHITEHORSE, YUKON--(Marketwire - July 11, 2011) - Today, the Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency and Minister of Health announced over $485,000 in funding for two projects that will contribute to a strengthened native broadcasting sector in Yukon.

"The Government of Canada is pleased to invest in projects that improve Yukon's economic infrastructure and support First Nation capacity development," said Minister Aglukkaq. "This investment will allow Northern Native Broadcasting Yukon to become an aboriginal business leader, able to compete in the national and international film and sound industries."

"Northern radio and television allow First Nations and Northerners to participate in social, cultural, political, and economic issues in their communities," said Ryan Leef, Member of Parliament for Yukon. "This project will ensure that there is long-term, secure satellite signal distribution for radio programming in Yukon First Nation communities."

Funding from these investments will allow Northern Native Broadcasting Yukon (which includes CHON-FM and Keyah Productions Inc.) to restructure their organization and take a more business-oriented approach, increasing their ability to take advantage of expanding business opportunities. This investment will also support upgrades and installation of radio signal equipment in 22 Yukon communities.

"The funding support from CanNor to plan the restructuring of NNBY will allow the non-profit organization to remain in good standing and continue to train and employ First Nations people in the broadcast industry while allowing the television division to establish and sustain itself as an independent film and television producer," said Sophie Green, General Manager of Northern Native Broadcasting, Yukon. "CanNor funding is also helping NNBY bring its aging CHON-FM radio distribution system up to industry standards and increase its broadcast reach to cover the three additional communities of Johnson's Crossing; Takhini Crossing, and Klukshu."

This investment is funded by CanNor's Strategic Investments in Northern Economic Development (SINED) program, which focuses on long-term economic growth, economic diversification and capacity-building in all three territories.
