CanNor Invests in Culture and Tourism in Nunavut

Construction of a stone circle plaza will support local capacity and prosperity in Coral Harbour

CORAL HARBOUR, NUNAVUT--(Marketwire - Oct. 24, 2012) - The Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of Health, Minister of the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor) and Minister for the Arctic Council, today announced funding to the promote the unique culture and history of Coral Harbour, Nunavut.

"This project will create awareness about the rich history of the community of Coral Harbour and Southampton Island," said Minister Aglukkaq. "Projects like these support local employment, help young people build new skills, and create a focal point in the community for visitors to learn about all the area has to offer."

"This project helped our people build new skills in stone masonry and develop a site that the Hamlet can be proud of," said Mary Eetuk, economic development officer for the Hamlet of Coral Harbour. "Funding from CanNor will help the community draw attention to its unique cultural heritage and encourage visitors to come and visit the many sites in the surrounding areas."

CanNor's investment of $34,000 will make it possible for the Hamlet of Coral Harbour to complete construction of a stone circle plaza. The design of the stone circle plaza represents the community's cultural heritage. It was inspired and derived from the numerous stone caches and sod house foundations that have been unearthed around the community - evidence that Inuit people have a history in stone construction techniques.

The funding will also support the printing and distribution of a tourism brochure and interpretive signage for the community. The brochures will provide visitors with information on the area's history and culture and the various attractions near Coral Harbour. It will also promote the use of local guides to tour visitors around the sites.

Investment in this project is made possible through CanNor's Community Economic Opportunities Program (CEOP), part of the Aboriginal Economic Development (AED) suite of programs. The CEOP provides project-based support to First Nation and Inuit communities for community economic development.
